Over my holiday break I got into The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. I'd heard of it before but because I don't have HBO, I never got a chance to luv it like everyone else. My parents have the whole first season DVD set, I indulged in them while home visiting and now I'm hooked! Jill Scott's a great actress. She plays a detective named Precious. The show is set and filmed in Botswana. It's really inspiring too b/c she a woman who starts her own business doing what she feels passionate about: helping people and upholding justice in most of her cases. She's so good with the accent and mannerisms and such that my mother's Ugandan friend just KNEW she wasn't American. We had refute her profusely and let her know that Jill Scott is a Black American from Philly. Lol.
I also couldn't help but fall in pure adoration of Jill's wardrobe in the episodes. And seeing that gorgeous fro had me wanting to wear mine out with a cute head band too. In the spring time, Milan....... Check out this show if you haven't already. It's also interesting to see how Westernized areas of African countries have become and how that the word "fat" doesn't seem hurtful; it just is what it is. I luv'd when Jill's character said to someone regarding her size, "I am of traditional build." Go girl; right you are.
Check out the show and be inspired by the music, colors, Jill's hair and her earrings and pretty Ankara fabric for her dresses and head bands. Anika Noni Rose plays her part well, too, as Jill's character's skittish and rather uptight but genuine and dedicated secretary. 97%! You'll know what the sentence before means if you watch the series. Hehe.

I believe Jill was pregnant with her son during the taping of the show, hence some of the clothing types- but I boldly admired the patterns and loved the fact that she rocked her fro!! I wear a lot of headbands, and they are super easy to make- you can simply go to your neighborhood fabric store and get left overs (sometimes for free, and sometimes for like a dollar). Take the left overs, and hot glue them to an old headband. And what I like to do is leave the ends of the material out on each side of the headband to use as ties. I often don't wear traditional headbands because they don't stay down, I like them to fit very snug. Nonetheless, thank you for posting this!!!! I hope you finish the series.... it was SO good!
I love love love this series. I loved Jill's accent too and Anika was on fire!
The stories were fantastic and the mingling of traditional and modern were reflective of 'real Africa'
The series was criticised for not having Africans as lead characters. In my opinion however the casting director picked the right actors and they were diligent in their roles.
I should've stolen the box set from my parents. lol I will see how much it's going for on eBay and Amazon or if the library has them.
