My New Cold Weather Hair Gameplan

That pic is hilarious, right? Sometimes I really feel like that though. Anyway, onto the topic at hand.....

My hair is getting long. Things I did last year aren't really what I'm interested in going for this winter so I've been trying different things to see what was going to work this winter. (The name of the game with kinky kurly hair is to just keep trying things till you find what works for you. Don't give up!) I tried to re-visit mini twists again and they were a fail again. I tried low buns but they were a fail also because they were rubbing up against my wool blend coat collar and my neck warmer so it was drying and roughing up the bun so I've resorted to up-do's that are worn high up on my head to avoid the latter and I quite fancy this.

I've taken to washing and blowing out my hair once a week or every 2 weeks. My hair's longest layers are APL so my styling options have increased. I've been mainly rocking 1940's and 50's style up-do's (pics soon come). I like them a lot and feel that they really suit me. With my hair blown out, it tangles less, if at all, and retains more moisture. This is working excellently for me.

I think sometime this winter, I may (crochet) braid my hair up again as well. Sometimes you need a break, ya know?

I've just been thinking a lot, kurlies and just wanna take it old skool again. Our mom's used blow dryers, those gawd aweful hot combs and the formiddable hair grease and most of us had a head full of hair falling all down our backs. It had luster, shine and was far from ragidy (at least in my case anyway). Really think about it, most of us, our hair wasn't messed with much. If you were like me growing up: you got your hair washed, blown out and pressed once a month, trimmed every 6 months or so and you probably had it in twisted or braided ballies and barretts till it was time for the whole process over again. That was it. No wonder we retained most, if not all of our length back in the day. So now I'm applying this technique to my hair but for a grown woman seeing as how twists or braids in ballies and barretts is not for the grown n sexy. Lol.

How's your winter hair care panning out so far?

PS (The original entrants of my Waist Length Hair Challenge, get your pics into me please so I can post them up! I did my length check and will be posting my findings soon!)

I've been doing well with two strand twists for about a week, and then a twist out for about a week. Both styles allow me to wear my crochet hat when I'm outside. I might rock a loose puff if I'm going somewhere that doesn't require I dress for the elements.

I so agree with you. I blow dried my hair recently and have decided to keep it up. I can't blowdry because I workout pretty often so I have been banding and sitting under a heat cap about once a week and I'm liking it. I lose basically no hair when I stretch it and I can detangle and style so much easier.

Yes, I'm loving it.

I just bought my 1st wig! I'll be wearing it for much of the winter as a protective style. I love it so much, I'm going to go out and get another one to switch it up :-)

I've been rocking buns, mostly. After washing, I stretch my hair in large braids, then bun it once it's dry.

When I was a little kid, my hair was rarely pressed and it thrived. Then when I was around ten I started getting it pressed weekly and it was all downhill from there. Old school was not the way for me. Since I've been natural (3 years next Feb), I've only blow dried once and haven't straightened at all, yet my hair is longer than it's ever been (past my bra band).

I've really been fooling around with what works best for me. So far, protective styles like updos & french braids have been working well for me. I still exercise so I have to make sure to keep my scalp clean.

Hey Moni! I luv when you stop by and drop comments. :D I just luv your hair. Old skool might work for me; I just have to tailor it to my needs and knowledge that I have now.

1xellus1: yes miss, please send your pic/s in when you get a chance. :D

Thanks for sharing how your winter hair care is going ladies. It's such a relief when you have together what works best for you. I hope more will chime in!

I like this post! I've been rocking cinnabuns, megabuns and other updos. After my weekly wash, I stretch my hair in braids. I'm gonna try banding again to see if I like the results.

Also, I made some changes to my regimen--I started finger-combing and stopped out DCing. I love the new changes--I put less stress on mt strands and save time!

My hair seemed at a standstill for a long time rocking mostly twist outs. Once I started wearing my hair in protective styles 95% of the time, I started noticing growth. Duh, I know, but for some reason I guess I thought that since I was natural, I could wear my hair out all the time and experience the same length retention. For me, this is not the case at all. So, I've been wearing two-strand twists into a bun and twist-outs into updo's.

I'm just starting my transition. I've been wearing twist outs and I roll the ends. But in terms of protective styling for the winter I'm so lost! My hair is too short for a real bun so I'm trying to figure out some styles for this weather.
