Product Review: Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk

I got inspired to try this product after I read Urban Curlz recent review of it. I went to my local Target and purchased it for $10 (8oz). I really like the Sweet Nature by Eddie Journey Hair Milk, but I hate that I can't buy it in a store. So, it would be nice to have a more "immediate" alternative.

The very first thing I noticed about this product was the tropical scent. The consistency is creamy and goes on smooth. My hair was practically a week old so it was pretty stretched out via braid outs and twist outs. I applied it to my hair in sections and it sunk right in and softened my hair almost immediately. It has some slip and because it softened my hair so well, I was able to comb it through my hair. I'm learning that I have to comb my hair at least once throughout the week till my next wash to avoid tangling and fairy knots (aka single strand knots). After applying it and combing it through, I put my hair into some flat twists. The next day when I took them down my hair was so incredibly soft. Check out the sheen ya girl had going on after using it:

Note. This product offers NO HOLD, it really is just an excellent moisturizer and will soften your hair, so you will want to pair it with something like a hair butter or pomade if your desired hairstyle demands hold.

Because it offers no real hold, I pinned up my hair up into a pin-up do. #wlhairchallenge Woo hoo!

A full 24 hours later: My hair is still fluffy and soft. I think that this is a keeper and I luv that I can get it in a store.

I also noticed once I looked over the ingredients again that it doesn't have glycerin in it. SCORE. If you are new to the blog and my hair journey let me fill you in: my hair basically hates glycerin and only tolerates it in serious moderation so I'm always on the hunt for moisturizing products that don't contain it (or very very little of it like the SNE Journey Hair Milk). So if your hair is glycerin sensitive, this product is glycerin free and still moisturizes very well.

Now this makes me want to try the (Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus) Curl & Hold Smoothie (it's basically a whipped butter) from this line.

This product will be good for hold for various styles. I'm willing to bet it would get my braid outs POPPIN. I smell another review coming!

I will look for this product line at my local Tarjay. I actually did notice the SNBE does not give my daughter any sheen.

I have also been using this product for just over 2 weeks now. I bought it because I knew that I could return it to Target withint 90 days with my receipt and clarifed that with the return department beforehand. Therefore I took no risks. I LOVE it. I used to use Karen's Bobdy Beautiful Hair Milk but I like this one even more. Like you said it offered some sheen and it also has coconut oil as one of the main ingredients so that's probably why. For an all natural product that's only 10 bucks you just can beat it. Plus Target is 2 minutes from my house so no more shipping costs for me! I would love to hear what you think of the Smoothie in this line as well. I have to go to another Target to see if they carry it but I will definitely go on a hunt if your review is positive.

Darn it Milan! I just left Target! I bought the hold and shine moisturizing mist. I also have the curl smoothie and their shea butter restorative conditioner (rinse out or leave in). So far I like everything. I haven't officially used the mist yet, I just sprayed a little in my hair once I got in the car. It still feels great.
I also love that I dont have to wait on it to be shipped and it doesnt have alot of unnecessary ingredients in it.

*sigh* I may go back for the hair milk later... idk!

My PJ-ism is trying to come back! Gosh, who am I kidding?? It never really went any where! lol

Anyway, this product line might be a winner for me.

Def check it out ladies. Target has def stepped up their game.

Yes, tracyata, Target is less than 10 mins away from me! This is great. No more shipping costs and waiting for it to come for me either.

Brandiss, girl, I don't know if it's the weather changing or what but my once uber dormant PJism is trying to wake up on me big time. Wait till you see an upcoming post of what my latest wish list item is. Lol. And you saying you liked the Smoothie is making me want to get it like now. Haha. But yeah, the milk is good. I def like it better than KBB.

I was so excited when Target stepped into the natural hair care product arena and even happier b/c they are available at a Target near me. I tried the Moisture Mist and it gives great results...but no hold. I'm really interested in going and picking up the Curl & Hold Smoothie. Even though I have enough Miss Jessies...its not at the top of my product lists. Good review.

Also your updo looks so moist and fluffy. I really like the look. I know many folks like gel or something with hold and slick back with updos but to me updos always look better when they have a more naturally wispy kind of look.

@ Brandiss - I checked another target and they have everything BUT that Smoothie. Luckily there are 3 more targets within 25 minutes of me! LOL. I did not like the Restorative Conditioner and returned it. It wasn't anything awful but just wasn't great either. The Moisture Retention Shampoo is a keeper for certain. It feels like conditioner going into my hair. SOoo soft!

I bought the curl and hold smoothie and LOVED it...I used it for my twists and the hold was nice! I just wish the product offered more shine...I think Carol's Daughter mimosa honey offers a great shine so I just paired the two when I retwisted and it worked out great =]] My heart felt very soft!!

I must be the odd woman out because I didn't love this one. I feel like I have to use so much to have my hair feeling soft and moisturized. I don't know if it's the product or that its still spring (ie not hot enough for a lighter moisturizer), but it just doesn't do it for me. The lack of hold doesn't help either. I don't normally use gel or anything like that, but I have to rebraid my hair every night when using this. I don't think I dislike it enough to return it, but I won't repurchase it.

Hey, could anyone tell me the ingredients for the Curl & Style Milk? I'm thinking of buying it because I need a new daily moisturizer, but I want to know what's in it first and I can't find the ingredients anywhere online.

This stuff is muy excellente! I am always hesitant to try new hair products made for our hair, but since I was in desparate need of a decent moisturizer, I forked over the 10.00. Before trying it on my hair, I looked up reviews for this product and found this blog. You were right. When I put this on my dry hair(which is really course and dense), it instantly made it softer, moisturized, and easy to run my finger through. Whoopie! The beautiful part about the product is that it doesn't contain the normal ingredients that damage our hair or flat out works against it. I am a fan.

I have tried two products from this (Org. Coco and Hib) Shea Moisture line: the Shine and Hold spray and Curl Enchancing Smoothie. The length of my hair has been relaxed for years, but it's been a good 4 month since my last. Also, I use Phyto's Index 1 (so it more of a texturizer, as I wear it curly). These product are miracle products! They are just as moisturizing on my new growth. If you want more hold, you could combine the lotion (I imagine- haven't tried it- yet) w/ the spray, or just use the Smoothing alone on damp/wet hair. I speak the truth- these two products deliver! I just picked up some the Raw Shea Restrucdtive Elixir oil, while replenishing my S&H Spray, and am excited to try it. (A little oil helps the new growth.) I'm a fan for life!

Well, first off....after reading everyone post, I'll be buying this line tomorrow. I did notice that everyone is buying it from Target, but I saw it today at Walgreens. They had the entire line and also they had kits of the different lines. Once again, thanks to everyone and I'm super excited to try this product.

Shea moisture smoothie is truly excellent, from the fragrance to the nongreasy finish and softness it lends to the hair. It decreases the frequency with which you have to moisturize your hair and is excellent with twist/braid outs. Enjoying your blog!
