Lately my hair has been feeling dry as all get out. I moisturize my hair daily but still, to no avail, my hair is feeling dried out and to my horror, the fairy knots are trying to creep back into the picture. *horror movie scream with shrieking violins* Oh. No. We canNOT be having that.
So what are you gonna do!? Well.....
* First, I tried adding baggying back to my regimen.
#FAIL #FAIL #FAIL Baggying just isn't for me, I've deduced. I tried it for 2 nights this past week with no real results or remedy to my situation. I would lightly mist some water on, add KBB Hair Milk (it has glycerin in it so I thought baggying with this would be good since it could draw moisture from the moist environment in the plastic cap. Unfortunately, this didn't work for me and I'm just about completely jaded by glycerin in the dry, cold months. No mas till spring!) and seal my hair with a lil (1 drop per section) of my oil cocktail then baggy for 15-30 mins before bed. Then I would take the baggy off and put on my satin scarf and bonnet. The next day my hair wouldn't really feel all that better (and now I have this annoying drip in the back of my throat. Uggg....): it was still hard/"foreign" feeling and greasy. So it didn't help and I no longer have an interest in facilitating this technique on my tresses.
* Next, I've had to bust out the protective styles.
For a while, I thought I was an exception to the rule when it came to wearing my hair out in this cold, winter weather but my hair clearly let me know that I am not. This weather was drying my hair out like a mug, guys. So just these last couple days, I started doing pin up-dos where all my ends are tucked away. I also plan to wear twists occasionally and try to leave them in for 2-3 weeks if I can. So too-da-loo kinky koils n kurls, I won't be wearing you out in all your gloriousness till the spring.
* Last, I went back to an oldie, that's not a natural product at all but I remember it delivering results back in the day.
I went out and bought some.......
Remember this? This stuff takes me BACK, man. I was shocked they even still sold it in stores. I just knew for sure that it was extinct by now but low and behold it was in the BSS. It has *gasp* mineral oil in it among some other ingredients that can be questionable. But tha. Ish. WORKS. No more dry hair and my hair's so effin soft and fluffy like it usually is. I instantly fell in luv. Not to also mention, that the sheen/shine it imparted to my hair is "so hard" (yes, I think this will be one of my frequently used terms in 2010). For once in weeks my hair didn't feel like a dry, greasy, knotted mess. Word of caution: I def only needed to use very small amounts for each section. A little seriously covers a lot of ground.
My grandmother used to use this on me and my lil sister's hair when we were kids. She would mist our hair in sections with glycerin rosewater and seal with this then braid or twist our hair. I remember our hair was always soft, virtually fairy knot and tangle free, long and healthy. My grandmother was onto a lot of stuff when it came to hair care, she just didn't know the "science" behind why it all worked.
I'm going to keep using this at this moment b/c it works. But, I'm going to get my mixing on and create a natural answer to this product. I'm thinking I can def substitute the mineral oil with castor oil for starters and find more eco-friendly binding agents and preservatives. More on this endeavor in another post (Mixtress Chronicles bay-bee) though.

i just started using it 2 weeks ago i hate I didnt get it sooner.
Im glad you found something to get that feeling back, usually when that happens to me I bust out the clay and let it suck all the bad toxins out my hair and start again
Im going to try to keep my hair protected until it gets warmer here. I thought I was exempt because Im in Georgia and it isnt THAT cold, but my hair doesnt like the cold air...PERIOD!
Brandiss, I thought you'd be exempt there too cuz it doesn't get so cold down there. Wow.
Shawnystheone, I've been wanting to try bentonite or rassoul clay for a hot minute. Think I'm gonna try it soon. I hear such good things about them.
